A calm place to begin

What happens in a first driving lesson?

Your instructor will ask about any experience you have and explain the plan before you set off. You can ask questions as you go; there is no expectation that you already know how to drive.

  1. Get settled. Adjust the seat and mirrors, learn the main controls and talk through safety checks.
  2. Try the basics. When it is suitable, practise moving off and stopping with your instructor guiding you.
  3. Review together. Talk about what felt comfortable and what you would like to practise next.

Skills grow in sequence

From first controls to independent driving

Lessons build on what you can already do. Your instructor can repeat a skill or move forward when you are ready to handle a new situation safely.

Controls and observation

Learn cockpit checks, mirrors, signals and how the car responds to steering and pedals.

Moving and positioning

Practise safe starts, stops, speed choice and keeping a suitable position on the road.

Junctions and traffic

Build your approach to junctions, meeting traffic and roundabouts as your control develops.

Manoeuvres and journeys

Work towards parking, reversing and making independent decisions on different roads.

Choose your transmission

Manual or automatic lessons?

Both routes cover observation, road positioning and safe decisions. The difference is how you operate the car and which licence you want to work towards.

Manual

Learn clutch and gears

Build control of the clutch, gear changes and road awareness together. Read about manual lessons.

Automatic

Remove manual gear changes

There is no clutch pedal or manual gear selection. Compare whether automatic lessons suit your goals.

Common questions

Starting driving lessons

Do I need any driving experience?

No. Beginner lessons can start with the basic controls and a quiet introduction to moving and stopping.

Will my first lesson start in busy traffic?

Your route should reflect your experience and the conditions on the day. You can talk with your instructor about beginning somewhere quieter before taking on busier roads.

How many lessons will I need?

It varies with your starting point, practice and how quickly skills become consistent. Your instructor can review progress with you rather than guess a fixed number in advance.

Can I choose manual or automatic?

Yes. Tell NextPass which transmission you prefer when arranging lessons; local instructor availability will be confirmed.
