Your automatic lesson questions

Can I drive a manual car after passing in an automatic?

Normally, an automatic car test gives you an automatic-only licence. To drive a manual car you need to meet the upgrade requirements and pass a manual test. See GOV.UK’s automatic-to-manual guidance for the rules that apply to you.

Will I need fewer lessons in an automatic?

Removing clutch and gear changes can make some tasks simpler, but observation, judgement and safe independent driving still need practice. Your progress depends on your starting point and how you learn; we cannot promise a lower number of lessons or an earlier pass.

Can I switch from manual to automatic lessons?

You can ask about changing gearbox. Contact NextPass before changing your booking so we can check instructor availability and agree any changes with you. A change of instructor or timetable is not automatic. An automatic-only licence does not permit you to drive a manual car.

What happens after I book online?

Once you’ve booked, we’ll get to work arranging a suitable instructor and contact you as soon as possible to organise your first lesson. We’ll confirm your start date, lesson times and pick-up point with you, taking your postcode, gearbox choice and preferred times into account.
